Meet Amina Gauthier | The Badass Black Girl Vlog
In this episode of Badass Black Girl, MJ talks with Dr. Amina Gautier, fiction writer, scholar of 19th Century American and African American literature and professor at the University of Miami. They talk about her impressive publishing record (127 short stories published!), her three collections of short fiction, her writing process, and how she finds a groove. Amina talks about things that every writer should do to become proficient beyond craft, including protecting your writing energy and turning off your phone.
MJ asks her about how she finds time to write, how the pandemic has changed her writing life, and about her self-care routine. Amina shares how science fiction, Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe help her through periods of despair and get her back on track.
Dr. Amina Gautier is a recipient of the 2018 PEN/MALAMUD Award for Excellence in the Short Story, and the first black woman to win this award. She is the author of three award-winning short story collections: At-Risk, Now We Will Be Happy and the The Loss of All Lost Things. She teaches at the University of Miami.
